With the new Hobbit movie scheduled to premiere in December 2012, and 2012 being the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, Valparaiso University will be hosting a scholarly conference dedicated to celebrating these milestones along with all of the other works of J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973). Dr. Brad Eden, Dean of Library Services and editor of Middle-earth minstrel: essays on music in Tolkien (McFarland, 2010) will serve as host.
This conference will feature a 25th anniversary performance of Symphony #1 “The Lord of the Rings” by Johan de Meij, with the composer in attendance and conducting. There will also be an exhibit in the Brauer Museum of Art on campus, featuring rare and unusual Tolkien memorabilia from Dr. Eden’s extensive collection, including several signed letters and books. Many other special events, including a song cycle performance and themed Saturday evening dinner, are being scheduled. Well-known Tolkien scholars Verlyn Flieger, John D. Rateliff, and Douglas A. Anderson have agreed to serve as plenary speakers.
